Descrição

This book presents the results of my research on language learning in the tourist market in Aswan, Egypt, where vendors speak languages from the European, Asian and American continents to tourists on a daily basis.

Such peculiarity aroused my interest in studying this place with the following questions in mind: When did the market become a place for learning and using languages? Which languages are most learnt and why? What does the ability to speak foreign languages mean to the vendors? When, with whom and how do the vendors use the languages they learn?

The objective of this research was to understand both the market as a historical and contextual place for the learning and usage of languages and the conceptions the vendors themselves had about learning, as well as to outline the circumstances around learning and usage of the languages learnt.
